Window Tinting: When You Can and Cannot Do It

If you are considering window tinting on your car, however, are unsure what the state laws are, read this post of Luxury Films and Tint by Eric Scara now.

Does Your Vehicle’s Tinting Violate Your State’s Laws?

Measurements such as light transmittance and luminous reflectance can be somewhat confusing to understand. And even more so to calculate with any level of confidence. So you should have your vehicle inspected in order to determine whether it is in full compliance with all your state’s vehicle tinting laws.

A government inspector or even a privately licensed professional can inspect your vehicle. They will use a light transmission-measuring device known as a photometer. This will determine if your vehicle’s safety glass and window tinting are in full compliance with the “light transmittance” or “luminous reflectance” standards.

To learn where you can have this done, contact your state’s department of motor vehicles, or DMV office. And remember, even if your vehicle’s safety glass is in compliance with your state’s laws, this can often change if you leave the state.

Most state laws are concerned with the levels of “light transmittance” or “luminous reflectance” that the safety glass allows. Which means how much light gets through, and how much visibility the glass will actually allow.

This means windows that are illegal will only allow a certain amount of light to come through, which is below the state law rules. So if the police see this, they will pull you over and inform you that your vehicle does not comply with the state’s vehicle code and give you a citation.

Many state vehicle codes will have different light transmittance requirements for the front windshield when compared to the vehicle’s side and rear windows. Lastly, most state vehicle laws state that no vehicle windshield can have opaque or mirrored glass unless of course, you are the President of the United States!
